Rotterdam feels like a ‘real’ city. Based as I am in Amsterdam, which lacks that big city vibe, I’m impressed by Rotterdam’s architecture. It has a skyline that reminds me of New York or Chicago; it doesn’t feel Dutch, it has high-rises. Bombed during the war, this sprawling city has been steadily regaining its luster ever since. Today, the center of Rotterdam is vibrant, modern and multi-cultural. You can find just about every kind of food, and a mix of stores line the streets. African hairdressers, Indian supermarkets and Surinam cafes jostle for space next to trendy design stores and yuppie cafes.

Recently, it’s developed a reputation for welcoming new art forms, architecture, cultural projects and young entrepreneurs. Scratch the surface though and you’ll find its tougher neighborhoods - hoods with social problems the same as anywhere else. Compared to some of the other places that Say My Name has traveled to, Rotterdam strikes you as place where women have choices. In many ways, this turns out to be true. But the women we spoke to still face issues, and many of them are the same as those faced by women we’ve met on African streets and in American projects.

SAY MY NAME ROTTERDAM

Mamamess presents Say My Name Rotterdam, an outdoor photo exhibition of women of Rotterdam. A part of Rotterdam’s La City '08 festival, twelve large-scale portraits can be seen on walls, windows and buildings in the city until July 20th.

The indoor exhibition runs until July 20th in the CBK (Nieuwe Binnenweg 75).
