co-owns the successful Toko 94 restaurant
in
Witte de Withstraat , a popular street
in the heart of Rotterdam. We got in touch via
friends and met up in her restaurant.
She’s an open, warm and opinionated 25-year-old woman who I liked immediately. We talked while she cooked her mouth-watering Caribbean dishes, occasionally stopping to pull out her phone and drop me the number of someone she thought I should meet. Thanks to her, I met Juliana, one of the 12 women who’s included in the final exhibition.
When I asked Manuela how hard it was to put the plans for the restaurant down on paper or get the loans, she told me that ‘you just have to do it’. She did and then asked a young female architect to design the interior. It’s been tough but now, two years later, it’s the local hangout. I enjoyed some great evenings there and can see why it’s known for delicious food and soulful music. It’s doing so well, they plan to open a place in Amsterdam. It sounds too easy…
