ARUNA

Our first hook up in Rotterdam was Aruna. She’s a Rotterdam B-girl and we’ve been friends a long time. Though we’ve always wanted to work together, it seems like we were always on different continents – this project was out first chance.

Aruna is a woman who fought to achieve her dream of becoming a break-dancer. Once she was established she founded
‘HipHopHuis’, which became an institution for the local break dancing scene. Now, it’s home to all kinds of (street) dance forms and Aruna has become a role model for many young women in Rotterdam.

It was Aruna who called me and told me about LaCity. We decided to meet and the idea to do a special Say My Name that would pay respect to the local women of Rotterdam was born right there. Aruna dug it immediately.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get to execute the mutual plans we spoke about, but Aruna did establish a new hip hop festival called Street Science, and she’s dedicated this year’s to women. Meanwhile, Say My Name Rotterdam wouldn’t have been what it was without the support and guidance of Aruna. We share the space, the love and the respect we think women should get.
